There is a proposition on the California ballot that might allow doctors to prescribe marijuana to patients dying from cancer and AIDS (you know, that homosexual disease). Supposedly, the marijuana helps out by increasing the patient’s appetite. I’ve seen those thin, dying people on the television. They really do look horrible, but I’m sure that they could eat if they really wanted to. I don’t think this is about hunger at all. This is about suffering people, afraid and waiting for their inevitable death, wanting to get really stoned, and I, for one, expect more out of our critically ill.

The `medical’ use of marijuana is a disgrace. What kind of message does this send to our young ones? That drugs are good? That being high on pot is `radical’? Not doing drugs is a moral decision that our young people must make. That nice lady Nancy Reagan really said a mouthful when she said “Just Say No!” Like most things in life, drugs are a black and white issue: they are bad. They should all be illegal.

And while we’re at it, lets stomp out the other drugs that are turning our nation’s hospitals into morally decrepid havens for junkies. Why, I hear there are people in hospital beds who actually take morphine `for pain.’ Imagine that! They should get up off their butts and deal with their problems in a positive manner, not wallow in the gutter with intoxicated brains of mush.

Why just last week some of my lady friends were over for Bloody Marys and cards. A so-called friend of mine was reaching for her drink and accidentally dropped a orange pill into one of my ashtrays, almost extinguishing my cigarette. Assuming it was a heart pill like the ones I take, I handed it back to her. Lo and behold, I found out later it was a ‘Perky Den’ (or something like that) she was taking to ‘ease’ the pain of her broken hip. Needless to say, she is no longer welcome in my house. It is, after all, a Drug-Free Zone.

I may have never really suffered a chronic illness with excruciating pain, but if I was suffering, I know I would still say “no” to drugs. It’s the moral choice. It really is as simple as that.

Note: The Clinton Administration has vowed to prosecute any doctor who prescribes marijuana as medicine, even if Proposition 215 passes by popular vote in California. So much for the will of the people.

I am very worried.
